Great burnet (Sanguisorba officinalis)

A tall plant with finely toothed leaves. The flowers form a dense dark red oblong spike at the end of the flowering stem. Found in damp roadside verges, riversides and unimproved late cut hay meadows. The flowers , locally known as 'Burnip' , were made into wine in Westmorland as late as the 1950's.
